I find myself to be typically well informed when it comes to current events and what is going on in the world. I admit that I wish I knew more and was able to follow more real world events closely but if I'm at a party and someone wants to bring up a recent issue such as the latest Hate Crimes Bill that passed I will be able to join the conversation.
What I have recently discovered is that most of my news and views will come from websites instead of the traditional media which I guess you would include television and newspapers. Granted I do read some paper publications online but I tend to go to various other websites such as Motherjones and Democracy Now to stay informed. I tend to get my news from more progressive websites but I also read more conservative sources even though I find most of them crazy.
I find myself watching the shows on the cable news and over the last couple months but only as an entertainment. This is not news but rather spit shinned polished bullshit so dressed up and produced that the only way you would be able to tell that it was utter complete shit would be to actually be on set while they are filming so you could actually bask in the putrid aura of shit that permeates from whatever talking head happens to be on the show.
When did these news programs turn into that Nic Cage movie Con Air. You might remember the movie. Cage plays an ex con whose intelligent level is a hair higher than the temperature inside your fridge and gets stuck on a plain with prisoners so utterly depraved of any morality they have names like Cyrus The Virus and Dog the Bounty Hunter.
But to me watching the news is an awful lot like watching Con Air right now. It is something that I can put on and not pay attention too. I can sit there on my computer looking at hardcore Japanese anime pornography and half listen to what is coming from my television and at about five or six minutes intervals I can be utterly shocked how blatantly prosperous everything is (though the news will become much more entertaining I think when like movies like Con Air it has blatantly homosexual tendencies in it as well).
Most of it isn't even news anymore but instead structured to reach a certain audience who shares whatever ideology the show is trying to push to get the most amount of viewers that they possibly can because lets face it what is more important than actually informing their viewers and acting as the watchdogs of democracy is selling ad revenue and protecting big business.
That is why I get sick of people complaining about how the media has either a liberal or conservative bias. No it has a bias of catering to stupid people. These are the stupid people who are transfixed by the confrontational yelling matches they have on television; the louder the hosts gets the more righteous the viewer finds the hosts point. Most of these viewers don't watch The Rachel Maddow Show or Sean Hannity's America to become better informed but rather hear everything they all ready know to be true being spit back at them.
Take the newest sensation of Fox News; reformed alcoholic and fucking crybaby Glen Beck. Now hear is a guy who hawks some pro America populists message and for some reason not only invites but has made the Howard Beale comparison to himself.
The only problem is that the Howard Beale character was in a satire about network news and that in the movie Network he was actually crazy. Beck is just a huckster hawking his product for gullible idiots. He is one of these conservative assholes who whines about the limousine liberals but yet rides around in limousines himself. Those who watch him all ready agree with what he has to say and those who are detractors are some some faggy liberal (But John Edwards sure made Ann Coulter look foolish. Edwards fucked a woman. He fucked a woman who wasn't his wife. Your move now Coulter).
Glen Beck is a perfect example of the movie Con Air; something so utterly ridiculous and so far removed from reality I understand why it is popular. Like Beck the movie Con Air was popular but it fucking sucked and I think it is atrocious people actually watch and derive their opinions from the Glen Beck or Keith Olbermann shows of America.
